Fernando Alonso: Red flag hindered race victory in Monaco Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Ferrari’s Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso has stated that the red flag in the later part of the Monaco Grand Prix hindered his chase on Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel.
The Spaniard did the fastest lap of the race in the final moments and was all set to put an end to Vettel’s dominance. However, the red flag was waved and the Spaniard lost all advantage.
Alonso was disappointed on the race finish and said, “I think we gained one position with the first Safety Car and maybe we lose (the) victory in the last red flag. I really think in the last eight or nine laps, the tyres on the Red Bull were struggling
a lot - certainly in the last part of the circuit.”
The Spaniard added that he has nothing to lose in the championship battle and races fearlessly. He added that he will give his everything in the race and in the process if he crashes, he will not regret.
“Third in Turkey and now second here, so it was a good weekend for us. We were quick on Thursday and quick in qualifying, so it was okay for us. I am extremely happy because the team needs this result and the podium after some weeks with difficulties,” stated
Alonso.
The Spaniard was going faster than the every other driver on the grid and posted two back-to-back fastest laps in the closing stages of the race. Sebastian Vettel was once again lucky as he got a break when after Vitaly Petrov’s crash, the red flag was shown
and he got his tyres changed.
Before that, Vettel was struggling to keep his position because he was on a one pit-stop strategy for the entire race distance. The Spaniard on the other hand had a relatively fresh set of tyres and was charging hard to take the race lead which he could
not do so in the end.
Nevertheless, Vettel took his fifth race win of the 2011 season but clearly, other drivers are fast catching up on him.
