Fernando Alonso: Second place in 2011 drivers’ championship still possible – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that after getting the 2011 Indian race results he believes his second position in the drivers’ championship is still possible for him, but it will require a lot of hard work.
Alonso added that it is difficult to manage a second position in standings, as McLaren driver Jenson Button is in a great form at the moment.
There is still a gap of 13 points between Alonso and Button in the 2011 drivers’ championship.
The Spaniard talked to the media and stated that during the Indian Grand Prix the team was fantastic, managing to fix a problem on the front wing of his car which was only identified 20 minutes before the start of the race.
He added that at the start of the Grand Prix, he did not get away particularly well and therefore, Button was able to pass him and the Brit finished the race ahead of him in the end.
Alonso discussed his performance in the India race and commented, “Then I tried to stay close to Webber and when he slowed down a bit, I closed right up and, staying out on track a few laps longer than him, I was able to get ahead of him. Being patient paid
off.”
He went on to mention, “Today was a special day, full of contrasting emotions. In fact, the satisfaction at getting a podium finish cannot cancel out the sadness which has been with us for several days, because of the deaths of two of our colleagues, two
special people - Dan Wheldon and Marco Simoncelli.”
Apart from that, the 30-year-old driver stated that he is feeling nice to stand on the podium for India’s debut in Formula 1 racing and that he is pleased to have a new trophy to take home.
The Maranello-based outfit driver started the Indian race from the third position on the opening grid and after trying his best, he came on the last stair of the podium in the final race classifications.
After taking part in the 17 rounds of the 2011 Formula 1 season, Alonso is sitting at the third place with 227 points ahead of Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber in the drivers’ championship.
Let’s see whether Alonso manages his second position in 2011 standings in the end of the ongoing season.
