Fernando Alonso: Victory at 2012 Malaysian Grand Prix has changed nothing – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has declared that the team will not get too excited after taking the victory at 2012 Malaysian Grand Prix held at Sepang International Circuit on Sunday.
Moreover, the Spaniard says that they still require a lot of work to do to achieve competitiveness in normal race conditions and to become a strong contender for the season ahead.
The Italian marquee had been struggling throughout all the pre-season tests held at Jerez and Barcelona circuits with its car F2012.
Furthermore, the technical director of the Red team, Pat Fry ruled-out the possibility of a podium finish in the season opener at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia.
In addition, Alonso also said that they would face difficulties in the first few races of the season. However, he expressed that he felt comfortable and looking forward to do his best, later.
Although, Alonso secured the fifth position in the first race and afterwards, an incredible win at the second GP in difficult conditions which had given the Scarlet team a real hope as now they lead the championship by 5 points. However, the Spaniard said
that there was still a long way to go to be able to claim the title.
“It changes nothing to be honest,” he said. “We are in a position that we don't want to be in by fighting to go into Q3 and then fighting to score some points; we want to be fighting for pole positions and victories. [It was] a big surprise today to win.
We were not competitive in Australia, not competitive here and our goal for these first races is to score as many points as possible and we got as many as possible today with 25.”
Besides, he said that they need to make the necessary improvements and the significant preparations for the upcoming races.
In addition, he said that they were taking the best out of them to develop their car to fit for the approaching season.
He also said that the win at Sepang had made them really happy but it would not change their aim and determination to be consistent in their performance as the season unfolds.
