Fernando Alonso admits Ferrari not faster than McLaren in 2011 Formula 1 season
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso has admitted after the 2011 Singapore Grand Prix that his team is not faster than either McLaren or Red Bull Racing team.
As a result, it seems that the team might change its direction and settle with its 3rd place in the constructors’ standings rather than aiming for the 2nd place.
“Sure, if you nail the start and something unusual happens and you do everything perfectly and then some, the podium might come your way, but at the moment, the reality is that our car is third best in terms of performance,” he admitted.
Alonso had a great race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit this past weekend as he held Red Bull Racing team’s Mark Webber behind him for a number of laps on a couple of moments throughout the race. It was great to see him fighting for the 3rd place
at his utmost but unfortunately, RBR was much faster.
However, the Spaniard had a great start and even throughout the race, he was unable to cope up with Jenson Button or Sebastian Vettel who were the two drivers ahead of him for most of the race. As a result, it was quite clear that Ferrari simply do not have
the pace this year.
With 5 more races to go, Alonso admitted that it is not going to be easy for the team but he did praise them for their hard work as they are doing.
“We have five difficult races ahead of us, but our motivation does not change: at some point maybe we will be able to attack, while there will be other times when we have to defend, but either way, we will always do our best,” he said.
Nevertheless, the team has already decided to work on their 2012 Formula 1 car as a result of which they are not going to bring any more major upgrades for their 2011 car.
