Fernando Alonso admits Formula 1 is a dangerous sport – Formula 1 news
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso has admitted that driving a Formula 1 car scares him sometimes, especially when he loses control of things.
The veteran driver was in a difficult position on a couple of times during the British GP recently, where he had to take some preventive action against flying debris of the cars ahead of him. Although he escaped those incidents without any trouble, yet
Red Bull’s team principal Christian Horner claimed that the two-time champion could have been killed.
When asked about the danger involved in the sport, Alonso replied, “Yes I've been scared [in an F1 car], sometimes. Definitely races in the wet when you lose all visibility. It's a critical moment. And then at times like we have seen recently with the tyres
that did not hold, you get a respect for the speed and a sense of danger.”
The Spaniard went onto say that it is extremely difficult for a driver to control the car, once the tyre bursts. He added that the steering wheel starts shaking up and it feels that the rear end of the car has gone completely out of control.
Despite all of the risks involved in the game, Alonso said that speed was part of his life and he could not imagine life without it. He claimed that he likes doing things in a hurry in normal life outside Formula 1.
However, one of the most experienced drivers on the grid believes that he does not have the fastest car at the moment, which is probably preventing him from displaying his true potential in terms of speed.
Despite that, the 31-year-old driver praised the performance of his team by saying, “I see it [this year] looking good and I think we can give it an 8, a good score. We are definitely not the quickest car, however, it is a very complete car, so I am pleased
with it I would say. As for myself, it's not for me to give a number.”
Looking at the current lot of drivers, one can easily rate Alonso as the best, as he has managed to deliver strong results with a car that has not been fast enough to challenge the leaders over the past few years.
