Fernando Alonso agrees with president Luca di Montezemolo’s comments – Formula 1 news
Fernando Alonso echoes Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo’s earlier comments that the championship is in the hands of the team.
Ferrari has suffered a relatively poor start to the season as the F2012 was not at par with the top team cars in the season. Even with a car struggling with balance issues and other technical issues Alonso found a way to use the weather conditions at Malaysia
to eke out a win out of nowhere.
Montezemolo gave the example of that victory to say that the win was pure hard work and class from the Spaniard at the Ferrari team needs to work that way to fight for the championship title which now seems more achievable than it did before the European
leg of the season started.
Since the Mugello test the Ferrari update package has improved the F2012 considerably and it was evident at the Spanish GP that Ferrari will be a strong force as Alonso finished second in the race.
“Our president spoke about our chances and always wants to motivate everyone at Ferrari,” Alonso said. “We know we were not so competitive in the first five races, but all the same we got enough points to put us in a good position to fight for the title.
I completely agree with the president, it's up to us.”
“If we do a good job of improving the car and making it quicker, then we have a chance, but if we don't and are not fast enough, then we will never win the championship this year,” he added.
He added that it is motivating for everyone at Ferrari to know that even though the team started the season poorly there is still a very good chance of finishing on a high. The team is working very hard and hopefully the results will show.
It will be interesting to see how Ferrari performs at the Monaco circuit. The team will also be hoping the Felipe Massa who has been struggling for some time now come to terms with his form and finishes among points to help Alonso move the team further ahead.
