Fernando Alonso aims to catch Sebastian Vettel at first corner of Hungaroring – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that he is aiming to catch his major rival, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing at the first corner of the Hungaroring after securing fifth grid slot for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Alonso performed convincingly well in the qualifying of the Hungarian GP and will start the race from 5th grid position. Despite qualifying three places behind Vettel, he is positively looking forward to beat the German driver in this weekend’s race in order
to reduce his gap in the championship fight before the summer break.
“I have the chance,” Alonso said. “If we started eighth or ninth and he was on pole then there's no way we can arrive to him with the start and the different strategies we can do around the pit stop times etc. But he starts second and we start fifth, so
the first opportunity will be at the first corner.”
The Spaniard expressed contentment over his qualifying performance and said that fifth grid position is a miracle for him. In addition, he said that they are targeting to score good points in the race and are feeling confident as the Hungaroring has always
been too good for the Scarlet team in the past.
“Definitely I think it was a little miracle today being fifth. It is a track that has not historically been too good for Ferrari,” he said.
Furthermore, he said that they have successfully gathered some important data in the practice sessions which will eventually help in making the necessary preparations for the race.
“The laps were good, the preparation was good and the team was doing a good job setting up the car,” he added.
At present, the two-time world champion is standing at second place in the drivers’ championship with 123 points. Additionally, he is ahead of Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus and behind Vettel who has a strong lead over other drivers in the championship.
It will be very interesting to see how he performs in the season ahead and whether he will be able to win the title in this year or not.
