Fernando Alonso asserts young drivers must follow the rules strictly – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that the young drivers must follow the rules strictly to avoid any such incident which happened at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps during the last weekend.
Alonso could not score even a single point in the Belgian Grand Prix as he was severely harmed by the crash caused by Romain Grosjean of Lotus who drifted into Lewis Hamilton of McLaren just at the first turn of the opening lap. Moreover, Sergio Perez of
Sauber was also hit by Hamilton’s car which eventually caused the retirement of all the four drivers.
The Spaniard said that to overtake right in the start of the race happens more in the junior racing events. However, he asserted that in F1, it is critically important to abide by all the rules and the regulations as the stakes are too high. Therefore, he
insisted that the rookies should respect the policies and behave accordingly on the track.
“Certain drivers should try and take fewer risks at the start,” Alonso said. “It's a bit of a tendency in the junior formulae, but it would be better, if right from the start of their career, they got used to respecting more strictly the rules relating to
behaviour on track.”
Furthermore, the two-time world champion said that he is feeling very much upset as he could have easily secured a podium finish in the previous race which would have helped him in making his mark stronger in the title fight.
“What happened is a shame because I think a podium was within my reach,” he said.
Before the Belgian GP, he was leading the drivers’ championship with 164 points and had a strong lead over his major rivals, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing.
Even though, he is still standing at the top of the drivers’ rankings, however, his lead has come down to only 24 points as he could not pocket any points in the last race.
“We lost a bit of the advantage we had over Vettel, (Mark) Webber and (Kimi) Raikkonen, but we have lost nothing to Hamilton who, given how the McLaren went, is possibly our most dangerous rival,” he added.
