Fernando Alonso believes Ferrari can challenge Vettel in 2011 Singapore Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that he believes his team can challenge Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel in the upcoming 2011 Singapore Grand Prix, as they have the third fastest car on the grid at the moment.
Alonso added that despite their current form in the 2011 Formula 1 season, he still thinks of being competitive in the Singapore race, which is scheduled to be held on September 25, 2011 at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
The Spaniard discussed the Singapore race circuit and added that the Marina Bay Circuit is a very special circuit as it has all characteristics which they normally like.
Alonso commented, “We will fight to get second place in the championship, which is better than fifth, and try and enjoy every Sunday as we did in Monza - where we qualified fourth, attacked aggressively at first corner, fought in the race and then enjoyed
the podium.”
He went on to mention, “This year we did not complete our expectations. We were not quick enough in some parts of the year, and we struggled a lot with the 2011 car. Even with these problems we are second in the championship so that shows our aims and ambitions
to reach our targets.”
The 30-year-old driver had a good outing in the recently held Italian Grand Prix. After starting his race from the fourth place on the opening grid, Alonso ended up on the last stair of the podium at the Monza racetrack.
The team driver is aiming to challenge Vettel for the Singapore title following his third place in the 2011 Italian race weekend. He mentioned that they need to keep fighting and be competitive during the races for the championship.
Alonso further added that, the Maranello-based outfit always has high expectations for every race, because they believe their more developed package can help them on the grid and gave them better results in races as well.
After completing 13 races of the 2011 Formula 1 season so far, Alonso is sitting at the second position with 172 points in the championship battle.
Let’s see how he manages his race in Singapore following his podium finish in Italy.
