Fernando Alonso believes gap to Sebastian Vettel a big one – Formula 1 news
Fernando Alonso has claimed that the gap to Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel is a big one at the moment and needs to be narrowed down in order to stay in the championship.
The Ferrari driver had been seen as one of the championship favourites for the 2013 Formula 1 season, but things have not worked out perfectly for him. At the start of the year, he looked to be quite good and had the speed to fight for victories with consistency.
However, he encountered some bad luck in a couple of events, where he could have easily managed to win, which has put him in a difficult position right now. Although he is second in the Drivers’ Championship, he needs to start beating his main rival with consistency in order to cause problems for him.
Talking to an Italian television channel, he said, “We must try to finish ahead of Vettel. The gap to Vettel is beginning to be a bit too much in terms of points. We have to reduce this gap as soon as possible.”
The Spaniard was lucky to recover some points in the British GP, when the reigning world champion retired from the race lead. However, Vettel once again increased the gap by winning the German GP, which was so much disappointing for his rivals.
All of the teams will now be headed to Hungary for the final race before going into the midseason break. The one who gains momentum will definitely have a slight edge over the others, so every driver will be charged up.
Alonso believes that it will not be an easy task to beat his German opponent, who is currently enjoying a very good time in a strong car.
The two-time world champion said, “Any driver who goes into the Red Bull manages to go very strongly. We saw that in the tests for young drivers (at Silverstone). Whoever goes into the Red Bull is very fast — it is a fact that it is stronger than the others.”
At the moment, the gap between Vettel and Alonso is 34 points. The latter of the two will definitely be looking forward to win the Hungarian GP in order to gain some confidence before the midseason break.
