Fernando Alonso believes he must beat Sebastian Vettel with consistency – Formula 1 news
Fernando Alonso believes that he has to start beating rival Sebastian Vettel consistently in order to win the 2013 Formula 1 championship.
Talking about the result of the German GP, the Ferrari driver said, “It's true that in Silverstone we recovered 15 points, here we lost 13 so we more or less come back to the same position. We want to go in to the August break with a little bit less of a
gap so in Hungary we really must finish in front of him. Not an easy target but we need to close this gap immediately.”
During the previous round of the season in Great Britain, Alonso managed to close the gap to his rival by finishing on the podium. However, that was not because of the performance of his car, as Vettel had to retire from the race because of a gearbox failure.
The German was leading the race at that stage and could have won it comfortably.
There were no such issues with the reigning world champion in Germany, as he managed to hold off his rivals to secure another victory this year. He did have a KERS issue, which forced him to push harder, but that did not cause him any major trouble, as he
crossed the finish line one second clear of the Lotus of Kimi Raikkonen.
On the other hand, Alonso tried his best to get a decent result, but could not achieve a better result than fourth. As a result, he is now 34 points adrift of the championship leader.
The Spaniard was on a different tyre strategy compared to his rivals, which did not work out exactly as planned. Therefore, he added, “I think it was a little bit surprising the softs at the beginning, we thought after four or five laps they would be very
slow and everyone would pit but they pitted very late.”
Ferrari will get a three week’s gap before going into the next race, which will give them a chance to work on improving their car. They will need to better their single lap pace in order to qualify higher on the grid and then fight for victories.
