Fernando Alonso blames ‘slow’ Ferrari for poor Monaco show – Formula 1 news Fernando Alonso has claimed that his Ferrari was simply too slow, thus failed to challenged the front runners in the Monaco GP. The Spaniard was considered to be one of the top favourites at the Monte Carlo street circuit, as he displayed solid pace during the Thursday practice sessions. However, he struggled to deliver during the qualifiers and had to settle for sixth on the grid. Although the veteran driver would have hoped for better race pace, he simply lacked traction to be competitive in the end. As a result, he could only finish seventh in the race, which was not what Ferrari would have hoped for. Alonso pointed out some other problems too and said, “The team told me that we had a plastic bag stuck in the front wing for 10 laps, that took away performance from the front. And we had a piece of Sergio's front wing under the floor, and lost around 30 or 40 points of performance.” At one point in the race, the two-time world champion had to defend his position against McLaren’s Sergio Perez and he cut one corner in order to avoid a collision. As the result, the race stewards told him to give his position away because of getting an unfair advantage from his move. However, the veteran driver was not happy with this decision and said that he needed to cut the chicane in order to avoid contact with Perez. He added, “When you fight for positions with people who have two or three points in the championship, there is a risk. I did the same in 2008 and 2009, when I had nothing to lose. I was overtaking in some strange positions, and it sometimes works. And if you have a broken front wing, you don't lose anything.” Although Alonso is still third in the Drivers’ Championship, Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel has increased the gap to him by 29 points. Therefore, there will be immense pressure on the former of the two and he will be looking to score some solid points in the upcoming events. The next round of the 2013 Formula 1 season will be held in Canada, where the track characteristics will be completely different to Monaco and might suit Ferrari more than others.
