Fernando Alonso can win the title in Brazil
Formula one 2010 season has just 2 more races left, and the extent of the season being a fight to finish can be understood by taking a look at the driver standings. Fernando Alonso of Ferrari won last race and is now clearly at top with 11 points ahead of
Mark Webber of Red Bull.
Stefano Domenicali the team principal at Ferrari believes that despite of Alonso rising to the top of the table, the championship race is still on and will be decided on the final day of the season at Abu Dhabi.
Domenicali has been the man in charge of the comeback of Ferrari in last 7 races of the season. In early part of 2010 season it was the duo of Red Bull and McLaren who had been dominating the races. Ferrari though made a late surge and won 4 of last seven
races which has propelled Fernando Alonso to top of the leader board.
Alonso who won the first race of the season back in March at Bahrain, fell away in later part and could not keep pace with Red Bull and the British duo of McLaren also had the edge with their car modifications. Ferrari team had been working hard to make
number of changes to their car in order to keep pace with their rivals. It did take them some time but it finally did happen in Germany. Before Hockenaim Grand Prix Fernando Alonso had admitted that he would have to win in Germany, if he was to have any chance
of getting back in title contention. Alonso did win in Germany but it was under some controversial circumstances, when Felipe Massa allowed him to go past him after he was given a coded message from the pit. Ferrari did come under severe criticism and were
fined 100,000 dollars by race stewards. After the case known as team orders controversy was later referred to World Motor Sport Governing Council who cleared Ferrari of any wrong doing following a meeting in Paris.
Alonso meanwhile continued his rich vein of form and notched up back-to-back wins in Italy and Singapore. The Spaniard’s latest win may have had an element of luck in it as the 2 men ahead of him, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, both were not able to finish
the race. But Alonso for sure would not complain and now has a great chance of winning the world championship.
It may be a long shot but if things really do go Fernando’s way and he wins in Brazil and his rivals once again do not manage to finish, he may be able to clinch the title in Sao Paulo. But still that is highly unlikely to happen.
If one does take into account some superstition, Alonso may have a great chance of winning the title in Brazil. Fernando Alonso has won 2 world championships 2005 and 2006, and he won both those titles at the same Interlagos circuit in Brazil. Going further
back Fernando Alonso has won most number of races at Brazil in last 7 years. Also looking at his current form it would be hard to bet against the 2-time world champion.
However Stefano Domenicali is refusing to read too much into those permutations, and said that the task for his team is pretty simple. Win the last 2 races and grab the title, but rest assured McLaren and Red Bull will not leave any stone unturned in their
bid to stop Alonso from winning the title. The drama continues at Brazil in a week and a half’s time.
