Fernando Alonso claims Ferrari are ‘closer than ever’ to Red Bull after British GP qualifiers
The two-time former world champion Fernando Alonso has said that Ferrari are currently ‘closer than ever’ to Red Bull Racing following the qualifying session of the 2011 Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
“I was second in Canada but this third feels much better because to be within one tenth of pole position this is completely new for us this year. And a little bit of a good surprise because you normally bring new parts to the race as always, you test it
on Fridays and then you see which ones are working and which ones need more time to put on the car,” said Alonso.
Alonso scored the 3rd place during the qualifying session as a result of which he is going to head row 2 alongside his teammate Felipe Massa during the race this coming Sunday.
Ferrari were looking pretty good as compared to McLaren as both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button struggled to get the most out of their respective cars throughout the weekend. Meanwhile, the Red Bull Racing team on the other hand was again full of surprises.
Mark Webber scored the pole position while his teammate and current championship leader Sebastian Vettel scored the second fastest time of the session to take the 2nd place.
Either way, the start of the British Grand Prix is going to be very important for the first two rows at least and the weather is going to play a major role this weekend as well.
“Definitely we are closer than ever. We have always been a second behind (in qualifying) and sometimes finished second or third in the races but a little bit closer to Red Bull,” said the Spaniard.
Alonso is hoping for the best even if it rains or not. He was just around a tenth of a second off from Webber’s fastest time of the session. As a result, he is confident that the team is going to have the upper hand during the race.
