Fernando Alonso commits future with Scuderia Ferrari until 2016 season – Formula 1 news
Two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso has renewed his contract with the Ferrari team that will see him stay with the side until the 2016 season.
Alonso said that he has complete faith in the people working in the Maranello factory and he felt at home during his stay with the Italian side. The Spaniard added that he would love to end his career with the team.
After signing the contract Alonso said, “I’m very happy to have reached this agreement. I immediately felt comfortable within Ferrari and now it feels to me like a second family. I have the utmost faith in the men and women who work in Maranello and in those
who lead them.”
Alonso joined the team in the 2010 season for a three-year contract ending in 2012. Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo stated that Alonso is an asset for the Ferrari team and will stay for a long time.
Luca said, “It is a great pleasure to have renewed our agreement with a driver who has always demonstrated a winning mentality even in the most difficult circumstances. Fernando has all the required qualities to play a leading role in the history of Ferrari.”
The Ferrari boss added that Alonso has all the required qualities and he will win races in the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Alonso brought the new generation Ferrari team in contention of the title in the 2010 season but lost the battle to Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel at the season finale in Abu Dhabi by four points.
However, in the 2011 season, Alonso has not been able to challenge the likes of Red Bull and McLaren due to his car’s slowness.
As most of the drivers see Ferrari as a dream drive, especially Vettel, there is still a vacancy in the Ferrari team if Felipe Massa fails in the 2011 season.
Nevertheless, Alonso is confirmed but cannot afford to sit back and enjoy as the 2011 Formula 1 season continues in his home track Spain on May 22.
