Fernando Alonso considers 2012 Canadian GP crucial for season ahead – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso believes that if they will be able to perform well in 2012 Canadian Grand Prix, which is to be held at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal on June 10, they will be competitive for the season ahead.
The Scarlet team struggled throughout the pre-season testing programme with F2012 and expressed that they will face difficulties in the first few races this year. However, Alonso has performed amazingly well in the season so far as he is presently leading
the drivers’ championship with 76 points. Moreover, he is 3 points ahead of Red Bull Racing pair of drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.
On the other hand, the Italian team is presently at third place in the constructors’ championship with 86 points. Additionally, they are 25 points ahead of Mercedes and 22 points behind McLaren.
Furthermore, the Spaniard said that they have been trying their best to make the significant developments and the essential preparations in order to improve the performance of their car so as to fight for the championship title this year.
In addition, he said that they have made some major updates in the car which they will test during the Canadian GP. Therefore, he deemed the race in Montreal very important for the team.
“I think we have improved the car in these areas since the beginning of season and Canada will be a good test in this respect,” Alonso said. “Hopefully this weekend we will see competitive Ferrari and that will be very important for us, not just for this
race but also for rest of season.”
Over and above, he said that although he is at the top of drivers’ rankings right now but in order to maintain the lead, it is very important to score points in each and every race in the upcoming season.
“It's a long championship and first six races brought us enough points to be in lead, but we are well aware that we have to improve. We need to make car faster while finding consistency, which is not easiest thing to do in this championship,” he added.
