Fernando Alonso considers Lewis Hamilton his strongest rival – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes is his strongest rival in the sport.
Hamilton has been considered as one of the most competitive drivers in Formula 1 as he has delivered some remarkable performance in his career so far. Furthermore, he performed tremendously well during the start of 2012 with McLaren and stood amongst one
of the most consistent point scorers. Even though, he was well in the title chase during the last season. However, he faced some technical issues in his car in quite a few races due to which he lost some crucial points in the championship. Resultantly, his
hopes to win the title faded away.
The 2008 world champion has joined Mercedes in this season. Though, he has been surrounded by many speculations that he may struggle during this year with the Brackley based squad which faced immense problems with their car during the previous season. Nonetheless,
Alonso still believes that the British driver is his toughest competitor and will surely attain competitive results in this season.
"Why do I say Hamilton is the strongest? Because it's what I think, it's my personal opinion and there is nothing political in that," Alonso said.
"Lewis has always won races ever since he has been in Formula One, even in years like 2009, when he had started the season with a car that was two seconds off the quickest. When you look at what happens on track, you are well aware of what he is doing, that's
a fact. Last year, Rosberg won in China, therefore I expect that this year, Lewis in Mercedes can win more than one race," he added.
In addition, the Spaniard also praised the performance of Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing who became the youngest triple world champion after winning the last year’s drivers’ title.
It will be important to mention that Alonso fought really well for the title right until the end of the last year, but he lost it by just 3 points to Vettel who performed amazingly well with the fastest car in the field during the last few races. Let’s see
how he comes up in this season.
