Fernando Alonso down-plays the Red Bull versus Ferrari race at Sepang – Formula 1 Update
Two times Formula 1 champion, Fernando Alonso has given up hope that in Malaysia, Ferrari will give a fight to Red Bull to the podium finish. After concluding Ferrari’s Free Practice session in Malaysia, Alonso said that the weather can play an important
role in the Sepang race but under normal conditions Ferrari are well out of the fight with Red Bull.
The Free Practice session is concluded in Malaysia and Red Bull are still looking untouchable, only this time the 34-year-old Mark Webber is up in front. The Australian was the fastest man on both FP’s and bagged some good mileage in his RB7. Sebastian Vettel,
who will be defending his title this year, seemed struggling for pace and finished fourth in FP2.
Behind Red Bull were McLaren’s duo, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, who were able to put some mileage and speed on their cars. McLaren are the only team who are testing Red Bull and are not letting them get away with any easy races.
The much debated Ferrari team are well down and out of the Sepang race, as Alonso said that lot of work is to be done and the car is not looking like a championship contender. “We'll see tomorrow where we are, but we weren't too fast today and we are not
expecting miracles for tomorrow,” the Spaniard said. Alonso’s team-mate Felipe Massa was also one of the underdogs in the Free Practice sessions, as he was unable to give any fight to any of the top three drivers.
Alonso commented about the Malaysian Grand Prix, that qualifiers have never been of importance as weather conditions along with the turning track are the major factors in deciding the race winner. “With the start, the tyre wear, the strategy, the possibility
of rain, we can take any opportunity to be on the podium, which is still the target every weekend,” Alonso said.
The Spaniard finally stated that the speeds will be of less concern if the expected rain pours down on Sunday.
The final Free Practice session continues on Saturday before moving on to the Qualifiers.
