Fernando Alonso ecstatic about second place finish in 2012 Spanish Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso feels fantastic on his second place finish in 2012 Spanish Grand Prix held at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona on May 13.
Alonso secured an impressive second podium finish in Spanish GP after qualifying for second grid position. He led the race during the first 27 laps but he was overtaken by Williams’ driver Pastor Maldonado who eventually took his maiden victory following
the second pit stops round.
The Spaniard said that they were able to take a good start and performed really well in the first part of the race as they remained ahead of Williams.
“It was a fantastic start again, so the team developed the clutch quite nicely again and also the procedure to do with the start,” Alonso said. “It was close on the straight until turn one with Pastor but then we had the better side - the inside - so we
took the momentum there and we led the race for the first part.”
However, he said that they faced problems with the new tyres and aerodynamics due to which they lost the grip on track and could not be able to catch up the Venezuelan driver.
Nevertheless, the two-time world champion said that he was delighted with the second position at his home circuit while he expressed his gratitude towards the audience. Moreover, after the race in Barcelona, he said that they have been able to make their
position stronger in this year’s championship fight.
“We were lucky at the end; this second place feels fantastic at home. Thanks to the people who came here and thanks to the people at home, definitely a step forward in terms of championship possibilities,” he said.
It will be important to mention that regardless of struggling pre-season testing programme this year, he has managed to deliver convincing performances in the season so far. He secured fifth place finish in the season opener after starting from 12th grid
position and took an amazing victory in the second race in which he set off from 8th place in the grid.
At present, he is at second position in the drivers’ championship with 61 points and is looking forward to perform well in the upcoming races.
