Fernando Alonso expecting a five way battle in 2013 - Formula 1 news
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso is expecting a tough competition in the first race of the season in Australia on Sunday, March 17, 2013. According to him, there is no
clear favourite to win, thus things will be quite interesting.
The two time world champion stated, “No one knows who can win this race at this moment. We have to answer some questions that winter testing never answers. This
year with consistency in the rules I expect five top teams to have a little advantage and not to have many surprises in the first five races.”
The FIA has made no major changes in the regulations for the 2013 season, which means that there will not be many surprises by anyone. Most of the teams have decided
to upgrade their previous year’s challenger and will be hoping to start off positively in Melbourne.
However, Alonso believes that this year will not be a lottery for some of the midfielders and the top teams will be able to challenge for victories right from the
start of the season.
He added, “From these top five it is hard to see who has the extra two or three tenths that can make you win. Now it is hard to choose one favourite. Mercedes,
McLaren, Ferrari, Lotus and Red Bull showed some potential on different days in testing and in different races last year. I think it's difficult to choose.”
Last year, Ferrari were unable to make an impression in the opening half of the season and their drivers Alonso and Felipe Massa were way off the pace against their
rivals. The latter of the two struggled more and almost lost his seat with the scarlet car.
However, the Italian squad did not make any changes to their driver line up for 2013, as they believed in experience more than anything.
Despite all the problems to Ferrari, Alonso managed to score points with consistency and had a chance of winning the championship. However, he needed a lot of luck
to deliver in the final race of 2012 in Brazil.
Although his championship rival Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull encountered a few problems in the season finale, he managed to score enough points to become the youngest
triple word champion in history.
