Fernando Alonso expecting weather to play a role at 2011 Italian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso has recently stated that he is expecting the weather to play some role in helping his team at its home race, the 2011 Italian Grand Prix this weekend.
The team has been facing some major tyre warm-up issues especially with the harder compound.
“For different reasons it seems that our car struggles a little bit with cold track temperatures and we had quite a difficult summer with four or five consecutive races where it was damp, it was raining, it was very cold and we took a little bit of time
after the pit stops and in qualifying especially to get the performance out of the car, so it's good to know that here it will be a little bit warmer, but we don't know exactly the performance change,” he said.
The team is looking pretty good this year but they have not been able to cope up with the pace of McLaren or Red Bull Racing on most occasions. The reasons why Ferrari are performing really well right now are Alonso’s driving skills and the team’s well thought
out race strategies.
However, the team is reliant on its luck as well in order to secure a promising result. Therefore, the Spaniard thinks that if the weather is warm at Monza, the team might have a better chance of scoring some pretty good results.
“I don't think there will be anyone in a dominant position this weekend,” he added.
Alonso claims that this weekend at Monza is going to be a very close race weekend between Red Bull Racing, McLaren and Ferrari but since RBR are leading quite dominantly up until now, the race might not have much influence on the championship run. The only
way things can heat up this weekend is if Sebastian Vettel retires out of the race or finishes with no points.
Nevertheless, the team is pretty much out of the drivers’ and constructors’ standings as they are over 100 points adrift of their rivals and championship leaders Red Bull Racing.
