Fernando Alonso expects Mercedes duo to be stronger in Monaco - Formula 1 news
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso believes that the Mercedes pair of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton will be the favourites to win in Monaco because of their supreme pace
in qualifying.
Mercedes have been producing some terrific qualifying results since the start of the season and there is no doubt that the team has got an advantage over the likes
of Red Bull, Lotus and Ferrari.
However, the German giants have been unable to win even a single race so far because of the fact that their race pace is pathetic. They are unable to manage the
tyres better like some of the rival teams, which has left them in a difficult situation.
Despite the issue, Alonso believes that things will be different in Monaco, where the tyre wear will not be much of a problem. The narrowest track on the Formula
1 calendar will most probably be dominated by the drivers, who qualify in a better position.
Last year, Mercedes’ Michael Schumacher displayed supreme form in Monaco and set the fastest lap time during the qualifiers, but he had to drop down five places
because of a penalty, which he carried from the previous race.
Although the seven time world champion will not be behind the wheels of the Silver Arrows, yet Hamilton and Rosberg are fully capable of achieving a similar result
in the upcoming race.
According to Alonso, “They (Mercedes) will arrive as favourites for Monaco. They've been on pole position for the last three races, they were on pole last year
with Michael [Schumacher]'s lap, so it would be a surprise if they weren't on pole position in Monaco.”
He added, “It's more difficult to overtake in Monaco, so maybe they can keep good positions for longer. It's something we need to understand and we need to do a
better job on Saturday, Felipe and I, and Monaco is one of those places where we must do it.”
The Spanish driver is also confident of Ferraris chances in Monte Carlo, as he believes that the car is in a much better shape compared to last year. Moreover,
Alonso managed to succeed in Spain, so he will be hoping to carry on the winning momentum into the next event.
