Fernando Alonso feels lucky to end the British GP safely – Formula 1 News
Ferrari driver, Fernando Alonso, has said that he is feeling lucky to end the 2013 British Grand Prix safely despite some awful incidents.
Many drivers struggled with the fragile nature of Pirelli tyres during the weekend in Silverstone. Moreover, several drivers were encountered with extremely tough situations when the debris flung on track after the explosion of
tyres.
Alonso also faced a very dangerous situation when McLaren driver Sergio Perez’s tyre was exploded and the debris tossed towards him. Nevertheless, he managed to end up his race safely without any accident.
The Spaniard delivered an incredible performance in the preceding race and successfully managed to secure third podium finish after taking a start from 9th grid slot. However, he asserted that they need to resolve the
tyre issue as soon as possible to ensure the safety of all the drivers in the sport.
“That one with Sergio I was so scared and so lucky because I missed the contact by one centimetre,” Alonso said after the race.
“Well, we shouldn't get into that situation,” he said. “We need to do what needs to be done to sort it out and make the tyres last.”
In addition, Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes also expressed concerns over the tyres and asserted that something must be done to resolve these safety issues.
“What happened is just unacceptable,” Hamilton said. “Safety is the biggest issue. Someone could've crashed. Behind the safety car I was thinking it was only when someone gets hurt that something will be done about it.”
Besides, Jenson Button of McLaren also showed concerns over this year’s Pirelli compound and said that the tyres have made racing quite dangerous by increasing the safety problems.
“If we keep these tyres, yes, we will have a safety issue,” Button said.
Furthermore, the Briton said that the FIA must take the necessary action regarding the tyres in order to ensure the safety of everyone in the sport.
Almost every team has expressed strong remarks on Pirelli tyres. Let’s see whether there will be any changes in the tyre compound in the season ahead or not.
