Fernando Alonso feels optimistic about the title – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that he is feeling optimistic about this year’s championship despite struggling with his pace in a couple of races due to some reliability issues.
The Scarlet squad faced a lot of difficulties during the last year’s winter testing as they failed to create thorough understanding about their car. Besides, their technical director, Pat Fry also ruled out the possibility of a podium finish in the season
opener. Nevertheless, Alonso performed exceptionally well throughout the season and successfully managed to restrict the damage for his team.
Although, the Spaniard showed remarkable performance during the preceding year and stood amongst the most consistent and competitive drivers, but he lost the title to Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing by just 3 points in the end.
In contrast, Ferrari had quite a reliable pre-season testing programme this year. However, they have faced some reliability issues in their car due to which Alonso and his teammate, Felipe Massa struggled in the Bahrain GP and could not score competitive
points for their team.
Nonetheless, the two-time world champion is not feeling upset and has said that they are in a stronger position as compared to the last season.
“Last year we were 1.5 seconds behind the top cars,” Alonso said during Thursday's press conference for the Spanish GP. “This year we have finished two races without problems and we were second in Australia and won in China.”
Even though, he said that they are some points behind from their major rivals in the championship fight, but they can surely make their position stronger if they keep on working hard. Therefore, he expressed that he is still feeling optimistic about winning
this year’s title.
“It's true we are some points behind, but the Championship is long and we have seen last year that Sebastian was 43 points behind us after the summer break and arrived with the lead in Austin. In five or six races you can recover 50 points with some consistent
results,” he said.
“Until we are 75 or 80 points behind, we should be optimistic,” he added.
