Fernando Alonso feels relaxed and confident about F2012 – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso feels relaxed and confident about the new car F2012 and says that they will be amongst the title contenders for the upcoming 2012 Formula 1 season opening at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia this weekend.
Alonso seemed positive for the season ahead regardless of the issues faced during the pre-season tests held at Jerez and Barcelona circuits.
The Scarlet team had been facing difficulties in its new car during all the three tests. Moreover, the technical director, Pat Fry ruled out the podium finish at the Australian Grand Prix after the last test and Alonso also expressed that they would struggle
during the first few races of the season ahead.
Furthermore, Alonso said that the actual performance of the cars could be only known during the qualifying at Albert Park this Saturday.
“We will find out how competitive we are on Saturday. The races are the truth,” he added. “In Winter testing, we see some teams that are quite quick and then when we arrive at the race they are not quick anymore.”
In addition, he said that they would know their standing in the approaching championship after the first GP. He also said that he was positive about the season in front despite the odds of the new car while he admitted that the car was quite complex to understand.
“I’m confident, I’m very relaxed about the possibilities of our car,” he said. “The Winter has been very tough for us with so many tests to do. It’s quite a complex car in terms of set-up and understanding the car.”
Besides, he said that they might have not met their planned goals. Nevertheless, he said that they were not behind the other teams.
“Maybe we didn’t reach targets that were very optimistic but that doesn’t mean we are slower than the other cars,” said Alonso.
The Spaniard said that he had a complete trust and belief in his team. He also said that the upcoming season was like ‘Tour de France’ while the first race was similar to the first stage and they would see how they might do at Melbourne. Nonetheless, he
said that there was a long season ahead and the Red team would always be in the sight of the spectators.
