Fernando Alonso hopes Ferrari will be competitive in Valencia Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Ferrari’s Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso has hoped that his team will be competitive in the upcoming Valencia Grand Prix of the 2011 season.
The Spaniard stated that although Ferrari could not win the last two races, their performance graph has crept up.
Alonso, currently fifth on the drivers’ championship table, added that with Ferrari there is always some pressure to win every race of the championship and for that the 2011 season has been by far the worst.
Alonso stated, “The characteristics of the circuit in Valencia are similar to Monaco and Canada so maybe here we will again be competitive. There is no doubt that in Monaco and Canada we had the opportunity to win the race.”
The Spaniard added that Ferrari are still some seconds slower than the pace setter Red Bull in the qualifiers for which the Scarlet team must improve.
Talking about Ferrari’s championship chances in the 2011 season, the Spaniard added, “The Championship is long. We need to concentrate race-by-race and to be on the podium in every race - this is our aim, this is our goal. We need to respect our opponents
and to understand that in some places and in some races we cannot do that. There is plenty of time and plenty of races to recover.”
Alonso qualified second in the Montreal GP which was his best in the 2011 season so far. His car was showing some competitiveness and it was thought that the Spaniard will challenge Vettel in the race but it did not turn out to be the case.
Alonso retired in the mid part of the race after having a collision with McLaren’s Jenson Button.
Nevertheless, 12 races are still to be contested in the 2011 season and especially after the clampdown on Blown Diffuser, it is expected that Ferrari will benefit.
The Valencia Grand Prix weekend is going to start on Friday, June 24, 2011 and it will be interesting to see how Ferrari perform there.
