Fernando Alonso hoping for major improvements until the British Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
The two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso has said that he is hoping for a “turnaround” by Ferrari until the British Grand Prix which is scheduled to take place in the first week of July 2011.
The Spaniard believes that writing Ferrari out of this year’s title run is pointless and insisted that Silverstone is a very technical circuit which will prove to be a big challenge for all of the teams in this year’s championship.
Alonso scored the second place at this past weekend’s dramatic Monaco Grand Prix inches behind Sebastian Vettel’s RB7. At one point, it seemed that the Spaniard might even overtake him to take his first victory of the season.
Ferrari had a very disappointing start to the 2011 Formula 1 season as both of its drivers were unable to compete against the pace of McLaren or Red Bull.
Nevertheless, Alonso revealed that the team’s next major test is going to be regarding the aerodynamics of their car at the British Grand Prix.
“Already today [Monday], I've been talking to the engineers about the new parts we will have in Montreal, but above all, of the steps forward we must take for Silverstone, when we will back at a track which requires a lot of aerodynamic downforce,” Alonso
told the media.
Alonso compared his run to the reigning world champion’s run at the Monaco Grand Prix and claimed that the title run is getting even more difficult.
“Immediately after the race, I said the fight for the title was getting ever more difficult, not to say impossible,” Alonso added.
He added that the British Grand Prix is going to clear things up more and until then, it will be more clear whether Red Bull are beatable or not.
The Spaniard is currently in 5th place in the drivers’ standings as he is currently 74 points behind the leader Sebastian Vettel who is leading the championship with 143 points. This means that in order to defeat the reigning world champion, the
two-time world champion would have to score three wins and expect the young German’s retirement at all three of those races.
