Fernando Alonso hoping for some improvements before 2011 Turkish Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that he is not expecting a podium position scoring performance by his team at the upcoming 2011 Turkish Grand Prix but is hoping to get closer to the pace of Red Bull Racing team and McLaren.
Ferrari had a very good pre-season testing period and back then, it seemed that they were the only ones capable of challenging Red Bull Racing team while McLaren on the other hand were not looking as strong as they have become since the beginning of the
2011 Formula 1 season.
Since three races, Ferrari have been unable to cope up with Red Bull Racing team or McLaren statistically either and as a result, Fernando Alonso is already 42 points adrift of Sebastian Vettel who is currently leading the drivers’ standings by 68 points.
After another disappointing performance at the Chinese Grand Prix, Fernando is not expecting a ‘quick fix’ by his team anytime soon but he is hoping to cover some ground.
“Realistically, I do not expect to see a Ferrari capable of beating Red Bull or McLaren in Turkey. But at least we need to bring them closer,” said the Spaniard.
Alonso still feels that Red Bull Racing Team are the team to beat despite the fact that Lewis Hamilton won the Chinese Grand Prix this past weekend and finally proved that McLaren have the pace to take wins over Red Bull as well.
“Red Bull is still ahead. Our car was the same, aerodynamically and mechanically, as it was in Malaysia. Mercedes and McLaren had improvements so maybe that's why they were better. We need to get to the bottom of our situation, to the core of the problem,
and improve from there,” said Alonso.
Fernando revealed that the team is going to make some improvements before heading to Turkey though but added that since most of the teams are not going on holidays, the rankings will not change too much.
The Spaniard stated that he is going to be on a break personally as he has been away from home since a month now and in order to clear his mind, this break is required.
Alonso went through a problem during the Chinese Grand Prix when his Drag Reduction System malfunctioned and as a result, his rear wing opened outside of the designated DRS zone.
As a result, it seems that Ferrari are not going to be one of the challengers for the titles according to the current results but the team is looking to make some improvements.
