Fernando Alonso hoping to take the advantage with McLaren’s help at the Hungarian Grand Prix
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso has said that he is hoping to take the advantage with McLaren’s help at this weekend’s 2011 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Since he is not starting from either row 1 or row 2 on the grid, he is hoping that if McLaren prevent Sebastian Vettel to take the lead before the first corner of the Hungaroring, he might also be able to take some advantage.
“To be honest maybe fifth is better than fourth in a way because here there's quite a big difference (in grip level on the grid), but obviously we lost a bit of ground, especially for the first corner if we want to put Vettel in some trouble,” he told the
media.
Alonso is going to start from 5th place on the grid behind his teammate Felipe Massa who outperformed the Spaniard for the first time in the 2011 Formula 1 season. Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button of McLaren are going to start from 2nd
and 3rd places respectively though and since both McLaren and Ferrari are competing for the drivers’ title, helping each other out will make things better for them.
The main goal for Ferrari and McLaren for the remaining races of the season is to disable Sebastian Vettel from scoring good points since the reigning world champion is leading the championship with 216 points.
“Consistency (is key), I think with the tyre degradation we saw this weekend we expect a lot of pit stops, a lot of tyre problems so we need to take care of this and we need to have a consistent pace all through the race, all 70 laps,” said Alonso.
Alonso and Hamilton are more than 80 points adrift of the Red Bull Racing team driver and since their respective teammates are out of the title run, they might even receive some help from them in the future.
The Spaniard did not rule out his chances of winning the Hungarian Grand Prix either and it seems that this weekend’s race is going to be very crucial for both Hamilton and Alonso to say the least.
