Fernando Alonso insists Ferrari must make improvements – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that they must make the essential improvements in their car as they cannot afford anymore issues which they faced in the 2012 Singapore Grand Prix.
Alonso struggled during the qualifying of the preceding race at Marina Bay Street Circuit and could only secure fifth grid position. Afterwards, on the race day, his car wasn’t good enough to counter with the speed of McLaren and Red Bull Racing.
The Spaniard has performed incredibly well in the season so far and is currently leading the drivers’ championship with 194 points. Even though, he hasn’t got the most competent car in the field but he has still managed to secure some really good results
with his amazing driving skills.
Though, he has a strong lead over his main rivals, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull and Lewis Hamilton of McLaren. However, he believes that they lack pace as compared to their opponents and has expressed that they have only been able to increase their lead
in the championship because of their opponents’ retirements in the previous two races.
Therefore, the two-time world champion has said that they cannot carry on like this and asserted that they earnestly need to make some necessary step-ups in their car so as to make their mark stronger in this year’s championship fight.
“We definitely can't go on like this,” said Alonso, who brought his F2012 home in third place. “It can't be the case that we rely on my closest rival to retire, as has happened in the last two races.”
In addition, he said that they must enhance their qualifying pace in order to secure higher grid slots for the races ahead.
“And we can't think of carrying to the end of the season with bad qualifying sessions like on Saturday, when our performance was almost a second off the best,” he added.
He has been deemed as the most favourite title contender this year as he has impressed everyone with his tremendous performance in the season until now.
It will be interesting to see how the 31-year-old performs in the remainder of the season.
