Fernando Alonso “kicked” out of his 3rd championship title dream
*Certain references in this article can only be understood if the reader has prior knowledge of the movie “Incpetion”.
The two time World champion Fernando Alonso managed to qualify in 3rd place on the grid and it seemed that the Spaniard was closer than we all thought he was to winning his 3rd World title as he was able to qualify ahead of his top
rival Mark Webber.
Since Fernando Alonso was leading the drivers’ standings by 246 points, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel were just 8 and 15 points adrift and that is not merely a marginal deficit if we come to think of it in terms of this year’s points system.
Lewis Hamilton on the other hand was 24 points adrift and it was quite obvious that he had the least chance of winning the championship as he was behind all 3 competitors.
Fernando Alonso had a poor start to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix but he was able to hold on to his 4th place ahead of Mark Webber. Since Sebastian Vettel was leading the race and Mark Webber was behind him, Fernando needed to finish in 4th
place or higher if Sebastian Vettel was to win the race. It seemed that the Spaniard was going to win his 3rd championship after all as his car was travelling at a reasonably good pace.
The two McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button were looking pretty decent as well as they held on to their 2nd and 3rd places respectively but Lewis Hamilton did not have a chance since each of the top 4 drivers were in the
points by the 12th lap.
One of the most vital turning points of the race was when Mark Webber went into the pits by the end of the 11th lap and fell way behind to 16th place. After a couple of laps, it was quite clear that Red Bull made the biggest mistake
of the race by pitting him so early and the team avoided this mistake as they did not pit Vettel before the 25th lap.
However, it seemed that Fernando Alonso got a subconscious attack as he was going way past his architectural limits within his dreams and the team decided to pit the Spaniard in the 16th lap.
Stefano Domenicali along with the rest of the team should have realized Mark’s blunder that this was not the right time to pit the Spaniard. This pit was the biggest blunder Ferrari made in years.
However, most of the critics believe that Ferrari got what they deserved after they let the Spaniard win the race in Germany as Alonso’s teammate Felipe Massa let the Spaniard win the race after letting him pass him near the end of the race.
However, Fernando Alonso had to pass a couple of cars and after he pitted but got stuck behind Vitaly Petrov, who was in 6th place ahead of the Spaniard. After Robert Kubica pitted from 2nd place, Robert Kubica dropped back to 5th
place and it seemed that the team that helped Alonso win two championships in 2005 and 2006, took Alonso’s third championship away from him in the very last race.
By the end of the race, Fernando was obviously disappointed and furious at the same time at Vitaly Petrov. However, no one could blame the Russian driver as he was doing his job and securing the maximum points for his team Renault.
The last couple of laps seemed like a nightmare for Fernando and it seemed that the Spaniard was screaming for his team to give him the “kick” so that he can wake up from this dream that had terribly gone wrong.
Fernando lost the championship eventually as Sebastian Vettel won the race after driving consistently and won the 2010 Formula 1 drivers' championship.
In the end, the Spaniard realized he was not dreaming and this was the reality as the top toppled after he came out of his car.
