Fernando Alonso owes his expected title to lady luck
The Ferrari driver, Fernando Alonso, believes that he has now come up to a "perfect" situation to bag the third Championship title of his Formula One career.
The last round of the season, the Korean Grand Prix that took place last month had been one of the very unforgettable races of the champion’s career. It not only marked great racing show of the driver at a very tricky, slippery
and rainy track, but also was an exceptionally lucky day of his life as well.
After having started the race from 3rd place on the grid, behind the two Red Bull men, he drifted safely on the wet track keeping his place secured. It was only at the 18th lap that good luck stroked the
Spaniard for the first time as Mark Webber slipped off the track, ending his race and handing over the second position to Alonso. However, the poor pit stop of the driver let Lewis Hamilton of McLaren takeover but fate hit him once again and a poor move of
Hamilton brought the second place back to Alonso. Finally, at the 45th lap, the magic wand worked shockingly for Alonso yet again as Sebastian Vettel who was heading for a certain victory suddenly had his race ended owing to blown engine. This not
only gave the 5th victory of the season to the driver but also raised him to the top of the tally.
With only two more races to go and 50 points to play for, the Ferrari driver heads for the Brazilian Grand Prix saying, "I am back in the lead of the Championship for the first time since way back after the Australian Grand Prix.
However, we know that with this points system and the gaps as they are, the standings don't really mean that much: it only takes one race - as indeed we saw in Korea - for the situation to turn itself round. All the same, it's always better to be in front
than behind!"
The Spaniard, had previously bagged two championships with Renault, and is pretty confident for the third crown as he successfully wraps his maiden season with the Italian team. “Knowing that achieving our objectives is in our hands means we are a fraction
calmer, but in no way does it change our approach. We will have to try and do our utmost, making the most of all the potential we have at our disposal. The only difference is that it would be enough, so to speak, to stay ahead of our closest rivals, without
having to think too much about the maths," the driver wrote on his official website last Sunday.
As he prepares for the next race in Brazil, the topper says that the track Interlagos, is fairly a short one which means the lap times would be much closer than usual. He continued saying that with this situation the slightest mistake on the track could
cost a lot. Also, like the last round of Korea, rainfall is predicted for next Sunday as well on the track which could make the round even more thrilling and adventurous.
Moreover, Alonso also suggested that Jenson Button, the McLaren driver, is out of the title contention leaving the tug between the top four drivers now. Button currently stands at fifth place, 42 points adrift the championship leader.
With Alonso being 11 points ahead his toughest rival, Mark Webber, Button out of the battle and also the other Ferrari driver, Felipe Massa there to help him steal points from his opponents, the chances of the 29-year-old seem pretty fair.
