Fernando Alonso plays down Ferrari’s chances of winning Singapore Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso has recently played down the team’s chances of winning the Singapore Grand Prix after the second Friday free practice session.
Alonso finished in 2nd place in the timesheets around 8 tenths of a second short of Sebastian Vettel’s fastest time of the day.
“The car is behaving more or less as we expected and the feeling from this Friday is definitely better than in Monza and Spa. But we have to be realistic and not expect any great surprises: the Red Bulls are still favourites here and McLaren are also very
strong. We will try and make the most of every possible opportunity,” Alonso said.
Alonso has won just one race up until now in the 2011 Formula 1 season which was back at the British Grand Prix and since then, he has been securing some strong podium positions which are definitely not good enough for the team.
He is hoping of improving his performance massively for the rest of the season but since his car is not as strong as McLaren or Red Bull Racing team’s respective cars, he really has to drive over the limit in order to defeat his rivals which is not something
easy to do consistently.
Other than that, he claims that since the Marina Bay is similar to Monte Carlo, the drivers really have to push to the limit for each lap in order to challenge the top running drivers of the sport.
“Here, like Monaco, it's very important for a driver to be able to lap enough to find the ideal reference points to be able to push to the limit, but not one centimetre over it, because every mistake is very costly,” he added.
Either way, the Spaniard is currently in 2nd place in the drivers’ standings but has already admitted that his chances of winning the title this year are over as a result of which the team has decided to shift its focus to its 2012
car.
