Fernando Alonso refuses to be called as favourite for title – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has refused to be called as favourite for the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship title as he believes that they are still struggling with their development process.
Alonso is shinning at the top of drivers’ rankings and has taken three grand prix victories in the season so far. Moreover, he has scored 164 points and has a strong lead over his main opponents which include Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull
Racing and Lewis Hamilton of McLaren.
Although, he is currently 40 points ahead of the Australian driver, however, he insisted that their car F2012 is not competent enough as compared to the other contenders in the field. Therefore, he played down his chances of winning races in the season ahead
while he discharged the label of being called as the most favourite driver for this year’s championship title.
“No, I didn't change,” Alonso said. “I think the main thing is in the summer, when you stop for four or five weeks and you see points you need to talk about F1 for some days and you see in classification there's a good advantage for us.”
“As we've seen in first part two or three bad races can make you lose everything, and in terms of performance I think out of the guys that are at front we are clearly slowest. We have a points advantage but we have a performance disadvantage so I don't think
we are any favourite,” he added.
Even though, he said that they have been trying their best to keep on making the essential advancements in order to improve the pace of their car, nonetheless, he said that their best has not been good enough in comparison with their rivals which can be
witnessed after the Hungarian GP.
Over and above, he said that they earnestly need to continue making the substantial developments in the forthcoming races so as to make their mark stronger in the championship standings.
Now when the summer break is over, it will be interesting to see how the season turns up for the two-time world champion.
