Fernando Alonso rejects David Coulthard’s criticism against Sebastian Vettel – Formula 1 news
Fernando Alonso recently defended the reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel regarding some reports that were released against him.
Former McLaren driver David Coulthard has also reportedly said that Vettel is yet to show his quality after which Alonso stated that the young German has proved a lot since he has won the 2010 championship and is dominating the 2011 championship as well.
“He (Vettel) continues to sweep all before him, and yet there are still those who question Seb's driving. As if he is simply fortunate to have found himself in a Red Bull. As if he is an average racing driver because he wins races from pole,” he said.
Vettel does rely on qualifying a lot but that is the sort of driver he is and not every champion can have same driving style as Michael Schumacher or Ayrton Senna.
The reigning world champion secured the 2010 Formula 1 championship and back then, this criticism might have been valid to some extent since he was not very consistent.
In 2011 on the other hand, Vettel has proved that he is the most consistent driver on the grid provided that he is driving the best car on the grid. Either way, finishing races strongly each week is a huge achievement and he has not retired out of a single
race in this season yet.
“I don't understand the criticisms about him, that he is not a real racer. He is a great champion about to win his second title and has remarkable qualities, a lot of speed,” said the Spaniard.
However, Coulthard added in his report that Vettel could become the best driver ever in the sport if he improves even more and keeps outperforming drivers like Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Mark Webber as well.
The 2011 Formula 1 championship is in Red Bull Racing team’s hands and it seems that it would require a handful of miracles for Alonso and Webber to catch up with the young German as he is more than 80 points ahead of both of them in the drivers’ standings.
