Fernando Alonso relieved after finishing fifth at 2012 Australian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso says that finishing at fifth position at the 2012 Australian Grand Prix was a good outcome for the team after its struggling qualifying on Saturday.
However, he said that he was still not pleased with the performance of the car F2012.
The Spaniard started from the 12th grid position and followed the pair of McLaren and Red Bull Racing drivers, in top four positions.
Moreover, he said that there was still some work to do on the car to improve its performance after he raced Williams’ driver Pastor Maldonado during the final lap of the first race.
“It was a tough race for us and we knew that before the start,” he told Sky Sports. “We had some good battles, we had a good start so we recovered some positions, and after yesterday's qualifying, to be fifth behind the two McLarens and two Red Bulls is
a pretty good result in terms of points. But the priority is to improve the car. We were too far [behind] yesterday and we were fighting with Williams at the end of the race. We'd prefer to fight at the top and this is our goal for the next race.”
Furthermore, Alonso advised that it would not be possible for the team to make the necessary improvements and the significant preparations to reduce the gap, ahead of the race in Malaysian while he said that they would need to wait until the third Grand
Prix at China.
In addition, he said that the cars would almost be the same in Malaysian GP as it was just a week away.
Besides, he said that they would work at their best to make a bit of enhancements in the setup of the car in order to make it adjustable for the track of the next race.
Nevertheless, he said that they would surely be bringing some essential updates after the second race in Chinese and Bahrain Grands Prix. He also said that every team would be working hard for making the crucial developments for the races ahead but he expected
that their work would slightly prove out to be better as compared to their contenders.
