Fernando Alonso relishes his third podium finish in 2012 Italian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso is relishing his third podium finish in the 2012 Italian Grand Prix after a tough final qualifying session at Autodromo di Monza.
Alonso faced a technical issue in his car during Q3 and came last in the timesheets. Nevertheless, he kept his cool in the race and performed amazingly well as he came third after taking a start from 10th grid slot.
Moreover, his teammate, Felipe Massa who has struggled in most of the grands prix this year, also delivered a convincing performance and secured an inspiring 4th place finish.
The Spaniard said that victory seemed very difficult after starting from the 10th grid position, nonetheless, he felt extremely pleased as he managed to secure a podium finish and successfully brought a great delight for his fans.
Furthermore, he said that almost everyone speculated that they couldn’t secure a podium finish before the race, which proved out to be wrong at the end as they efficiently limited the damage and managed to score competitive points in this year’s championship
fight.
"It's an absolutely perfect Sunday for us," Alonso said. "The win was out of reach; after the problem yesterday starting tenth it was not easy to think about victory. So if you cannot win then the podium is the next target, I think before the race all the
predictions we had we were never finishing on the podium so basically it's much better than expected. And Jenson was out of the race, and the two Red Bull's so it was a good Sunday."
In addition, he said that he took a tremendous start in the race as he passed four drivers during his second lap and improved his position to quite an extent.
“So when you find yourself sixth after two or three laps the race improves a lot,” he added.
Though, the 31-year-old could not score even a single point in the Belgian GP as he was retired due to an accident caused by Lotus driver, Romain Grosjean. Nonetheless, he has regained his courage back in the championship battle after the Italian GP and
is aiming to win the title.
