Fernando Alonso same as Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher – Gerhard Berger
Fernando Alonso could be mentioned in the same league as of the two legendary drivers, Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher, that's according to the former Formula 1 driver, Gerhard Berger.
Berger was Senna’s teammate and a great friend. Such a statement from him is indeed a compliment for the championship leader.
“There are sometimes those special drivers: Ayrton Senna was one, Michael Schumacher was one, and Alonso is one”, Berger told an Austrian TV channel.
Schumacher had won the first two of his seven world titles with team Benetton and that was arguably inferior to the Williams driven by his arch-rival, Damon Hill. Similarly, Alonso won his two world titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006 and Renault was clearly
not the fastest of cars on the track back then.
Although, Senna enjoyed superior equipment as compared to his rivals in the years 1988 and 1990, he did well to hold off Nigel Mansell’s Williams in 1991 and was able to win a handful of races in the years 1992 and 1993 despite Grove team’s dominance. However,
Berger believes that there is a difference between the good and the great.
Even though Berger wasn't able to score a title in his 13 year long career, he is still one of the most senior drivers in Formula 1 and a highly acclaimed critic when it comes to driving. Ayrton Senna is a legend and was always in a league of his own. Many
still believe that if he had survived the accident that took his life at San Marino, he would have had better statistics than Michael Schumacher quite easily.
He was a great driver and had a great personality on and off the track. The Brazilian had a 10 year career in the sport where he had won three world championships at a time when the best drivers were around.
“They are drivers who can win world championships without having the absolute best car,” added Gerhard Berger.
Berger believes that if Alonso wins the 2010 drivers’ title, he will join Senna, Schumacher and an elite band of drivers that have won 3 or more world titles. Fernando Alonso has already won 2 world titles with a Renault that always struggled on the grid
after the race. It would be quite a sight after the final race in Abu Dhabi if Alonso wins his 3rd drivers’ title there.
