Fernando Alonso satisfied with his third place finish at the Brazilian grand prix
Ferrari driver and the current drivers’ standings leader Fernando Alonso scored a crucial 3rd place for his team behind the two Red Bull drivers as team Red Bull scored their 5th 1-2 of the 2010 season. Fernando was leading by 11 points
over Mark Webber before the Brazilian Grand Prix but it seems that both Red Bull drivers were able to decrease the deficit, as Sebastian Vettel is now 15 points behind the championship leader while Mark Webber is just 8 points adrift. Lewis Hamilton on the
other hand is 24points astray but he is still effectively running for the title.
Fernando had a great race as he moved up from fifth position on the grid to 3rd place after taking over Nico Hulkenberg and one of his championship rivals Lewis Hamilton. After securing 15 points, Fernando hopes to take the title at the final
race at Abu Dhabi but it would be tough for him, as he must finish the race in any case.
“We will see what happens in Abu Dhabi with the drivers' championship, I think it's now very open, and now with a win for Sebastian [Vettel] he is also a very strong contender. So we will see what we can do in Abu Dhabi and we will see the result of a very
exciting championship,” said the championship leader.
Fernando stated that the team was aware of the situation and it was not as easy as it seemed for them but the bottom line is that they are happy with the points but the team will definitely have to work extremely hard to gain the pace Red Bull has at this
moment in time, before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
“I think we lost too much ground in the first laps of the race, trying to overtake Hamilton and then Hulkenberg. So those 10 or 12 seconds we lost at the start to the Red Bulls were impossible to make up,” he added.
Fernando believes that the team is very close on pace and it is not easy to gain the advantage when it is just a matter of tenths or even hundredths of a second. After the safety car period, it seemed that the Spaniard had a chance but the Red Bulls were
clearly faster and there was no way Alonso could challenge them in any way.
With just 1 race remaining, Red Bull are now the new constructors’ champions but the drivers’ standings still hang in the balance as the top 4 drivers are divided by just 24 points before heading into the grand finale at Abu Dhabi.
