Fernando Alonso says Jenson Button is out of the battle
The Ferrari driver, Fernando Alonso proclaims Jenson Button is clearly out of the Championship race. After having packed the Korean Grand Prix pointless last month, the chances of defending the world title now seems next to impossible
for the British driver.
The current chart topper, Alonso talked to the media earlier today saying that he does not see Button being able to defend his title. Last year the driver was teamed up with Brawn GP and was able to win six out of the first seven
races of the season thus, securing his championship right at the start of the season. However, as he shifted this year to McLaren he had not been able to do as good as it was expected from him.
Although, Button was clearly in the tug of the title up till the last round but his position was weak as compared to the other top four racers. Before heading for the debut Korean Grand Prix, the 2009 World Champion occupied 5th
place in the championship but then he was 31 points adrift the charts’ topper Mark Webber of Red Bull.
However, the very dramatic and action-filled round of Korea brought very surprising twists in the tally. Three of the top five racers, Jenson Button, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel walked out of the race being unable to bag
any score. On the other hand the Ferrari driver, Alonso took the best out of the opportunity and not only scored his fifth victory of the season but has also moved to the top of the tally.
With the present situation, the position of Button has become even shakier than ever before. Not only that he is still at the fifth place but also the gap from the apex driver, Alonso has been further widened to 42 points now.
With only two more races to go and 50 points to play for, the chances of Button seem next to impossible. Yet, the driver as well as his team is adamant to continue fighting until the very last race of the season, at Abu Dhabi.
However, while talking to the media earlier today the Spaniard said, "In theory, there are still five of us in the running for the title, but clearly Button is in a trickier situation.
"There are not many points between us to be honest and we saw how things ended up three years ago, but the fact is that are no less than four drivers ahead of him and it's hard to imagine none of them scoring points."
