Fernando Alonso says being placed between Red Bull drivers is the best Ferrari can have – Formula 1
Ferrari’s Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso has stated that his second place in the European Grand Prix of the 2011 season is the best that the Scarlet team can manage at this time of the year.
Alonso stated that his battle with Red Bull’s Mark Webber all the way to the chequered flag was a spectacle for the fans and television viewers. The Spaniard added that in Monaco and Montreal Ferrari were strong and again in Valencia the team showed progress
which means the Scarlet camp is moving in the right direction.
Alonso took the battle to the Red Bull duo at the very start of the race and was able to prevail until the chequered flag.
He stated, “Second place is the maximum we can have these days, so being here between the Red Bull Racing cars is a great achievement. Monaco was a good performance to finish second, Canada a good performance but we didn't score and here second is a great
team result. We are definitely moving in the right direction.”
Twice in the race, the Spaniard was able to overtake Webber which clearly showed that finally the slow starter Ferrari have risen up to the occasion.
At the start of the race, the Spaniard overtook McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton to place himself in contention of a podium. Before the first pit-stop, the Spaniard roared past Webber at the second Drag Reduction System zone which gave some hope to the spectators.
Although Red Bull took back the position via pit-stop strategy, Alonso was able to fight back in the latter half of the race to claim second position in front of his home crowd.
Talking about Ferrari’s chances in the upcoming few races, the Spaniard stated, “At the moment we are not in that position. In first few races we were 1.5 seconds behind, now it is six or seven tenths, so we have halved it. We will not stop working until
we reach the performance of the car.”
The next race of the 2011 season awaits in Silverstone on July 10.
