Fernando Alonso says he can afford more retirements in the season ahead – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that he is the only contender in the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship who can afford to have more retirements in the season ahead.
Alonso was retired in the Belgian Grand Prix as a result of an accident caused by Romain Grosjean of Lotus and could not score even a single point. Although, his lead in the drivers’ championship has reduced due to his retirement in the preceding race, however,
the Spaniard is not feeling upset and has said that he can still manage to have more retirements in the upcoming races as he is at the top.
Moreover, he said that though they have an advantage over other contenders at present, nevertheless, he insisted that they need to keep on making the essential improvements in their car so as to come up stronger in the forthcoming races as the competition
is very tough.
"What we need to do is concentrate on our job and we did quite a good performance until now and so far with the points and finishing the races a little bit better than our opponents," said Alonso.
"Last weekend we saw how things can quickly change and in two or three races you can lose an advantage. But at the moment we are the only ones that can do that," he added.
In addition, he said that even though he failed to score points in the last race, nonetheless, he said that he has still got an opportunity to prove his potential in the races ahead and to maintain his lead in the championship battle.
"We did not finish in Belgium and we could not finish maybe here and we are still in title contention," he said.
The two-time world champion has performed tremendously well in the first 12 grands prix and has efficiently restricted the expected step backs for his team which anticipated to suffer in the opening few races. Additionally, he has performed amazingly well
even with the car which is not very competitive as compared to the other rivals.
Over and above, his hopes are high and it will be exciting to see how he shows up in the qualifying at Monza.
