Fernando Alonso says he earned respect if not the F1 championship – Formula 1 news
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso stated that he has earned respect even though he lost the F1 championship to Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel at the final race in Brazil this Sunday.
“I feel satisfied with the job, I feel proud of myself, proud of the team,” Alonso said. “Obviously we lost the championship in terms of three points but I think I gained this year so much respect from everybody and I gained more other things apart from
the points. It was a good season, it was 20 races close to perfection; we didn't make any big mistakes, the team was fantastic in all the strategy and all the decisions.”
The driver has admitted that the team might have lacked a bit in performance but that does not prove that they were not dedicated. He said that they have enjoyed the season; the team put their hearts into the sport and fought right until the last lap. He
stated that the team is definitely proud.
Alonso said that his main focus for the race was to finish on the podium because otherwise he had no chances of winning over Vettel. He admitted that he was aware of Vettel’s race all the time but he did not take his collision in the first lap for granted.
He confessed that it is amazing the way he made it to this point in the championship fight despite having to drive a slower car. He is of the opinion that it only proves that Ferrari is still capable of winning the title even if driving a less performing
car than the other teams. He said that while he is proud of the efforts put in by him and the team, it is still important for Ferrari to improve their car for next year’s F1 season.
Alonso finished second while Vettel came in sixth. The better position did not help Alonso win as Vettel still remained in lead with three points.
Team principal, Stefano Domenicali, has stated that while he is proud of the driver, it is very disappointing since Alonso deserved the title more than the Red Bull driver.
