Fernando Alonso says he is fighting Vettel not Newey for the championship – Formula 1 news
Fernando Alonso has claimed that he is currently fighting Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel for the 2013 Formula 1 championship, not the chief designer of the rival team, Adrian Newey.
Last year, Red Bull were in supreme touch, thus their drivers Mark Webber and Vettel were at a clear advantage compared to the rest of the field. As a result, the latter of the two managed to win the Drivers’ Championship after an eventful race in the final
round of the season in Brazil.
Although Alonso managed to cause plenty of problems for his rival in the championship last season, he is currently trailing him by 34 points, which suggests that the Italian squad is once again not competitive enough like previous years.
However, the Spaniard thinks that Vettel has been doing a great job this season, which is the sole reason why he is leading the championship right now. Therefore he said, “Right now we are fighting against Sebastian. I said in the second half of the year
(2012) that I was not any more fighting against Sebastian or Mark (Webber), but against an aeroplane -- so strong was the Red Bull.”
The 31-year-old driver went onto clarify that he did not take any credit away from the Red Bull drivers, but actually said that it was hard for others to fight a team that can consistently end up on the podium regardless of what the conditions are.
Alonso went onto say, “This year it's no longer the case. Sebastian is ahead because he does the best job. As long as we are not 50 or 60 points behind, we do not give up. Sebastian was 44 points behind last year and still won the title in the end. Everything
is possible.”
When asked whether he would welcome Vettel to Ferrari in the future, the Spaniard said that he had quite a lot of respect for his German rival and would not mind him coming to the Maranello based outfit. He went onto say that it would allow the team to score
more points and fight for the championships regularly.
Although the reigning world champion has shown interest in moving to Ferrari in the future, he seems to be going nowhere for at least the next couple of seasons.
