Fernando Alonso says he is happy over his qualifying performance – Formula 1 news
Fernando Alonso has said that he is very happy with the result of the qualifiers at Hockenheim.
Alonso said that the weather conditions were such that there is a high risk for a driver to end up in the grass, the gravel or even in the wall, so it is something of a fight for a survival. He added that he finished the qualifying and then looked at where
he finished and when he found out through the radio that he had made pole he was really happy.
He praised the car and said that it has been doing really good on all type of conditions which is very encouraging as it means that now he can put up a fight no matter what happens on the race day whether it is dry or wet conditions.
In Q2, the team went out immediately, hoping to do a time on the first lap, because it was understood that rain would intensify. At the end, fitting the extremes, was important as the team at least wanted to have a rough idea of what the conditions would
probably be like in Q3.
“The last part of qualifying was very problematic because there was aquaplaning, to such an extent that we did not use the KERS and you couldn't use seventh gear on the straight,” he added.
He added that managing to achieve pole in such extreme conditions is really gratifying. The race day strategies will not be much different among the top teams of the grid but the degree of flexibility will have an impact.
He said, “Looking at the championship, clearly I can't be unhappy about the fact that two strong competitors like Hamilton and Webber start on the fourth row, but we know how quickly things can change. The start will be important, but not decisive, as we
have 67 laps to get through… A Spaniard on pole in Germany in an Italian car? I don't mean to be political, but it's definitely a curious set of circumstances!”
It will be interesting to see how the Spaniard fares on the race day. Alonso is leading the Drivers’ Championship going into the German Grand Prix.
