Fernando Alonso says he is unsure over Robert Kubica’s chances to return to the sport – Formula 1
Fernando Alonso has said that he is still unsure whether Robert Kubica will be able to return to the sport or not.
Kubica left the sport after he was injured due to sustaining serious injuries after he was involved in a rallying accident in 2011. The driver was rehabilitating after the accident and was being tipped to be ready for the 2012 season.
Kubica however had some more misfortune awaiting as the Polish slipped on black ice near his house and damaged his recuperating leg once more cause more complications and effectively ending his plans to return to the sport for the 2012 season.
Even before the second accident Kubica’s return was cloudy as the management and his contractual team of the time Renault had different ideas of when Kubica will be ready to return.
Kubica was always tipped to driver for Ferrari at some point of his career and he probably would have by now if he had not suffered the injuries. Alonso however has said that he is unsure whether Kubica will be able to return to the sport and whether he
will be able to join Ferrari in the future.
“It's very hard to say whether Robert will return to 100% fitness and be able to race again in Formula One,” he said. “Now and again we speak and I know how much it hurts him to be so far away from what has always been his world. He has to keep calm and
think first and foremost about recovering total functionality of his body, then he can think again about racing.”
Ferrari are looking for a driver to replace Felipe Massa for the 2013 season and if a fit Kubica is ready to drive it will be a situation worth assessing for Ferrari as they would love to have a driver of Kubica’s calibre in their side to support Alonso.
They would have to make sure whether the injuries and the time off have caused the Pole to be rusty and out of touch or not.
It will be interesting to see how Kubica’s future plans pan out, as it would be a sorry sight to see such a talented driver’s career to end this way.
