Fernando Alonso says new car complex to understand – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso says that the new car F2012 has some features which are quite difficult to understand at this point in time.
The Scarlet team had been struggling with the aerodynamics of the new car during the three pre-season tests. Furthermore, the technical director of the team, Pat Fry had expressed the distress at the end of the last day of the final test at Barcelona that
the team would face difficulties in fighting for the podium for the first few races of the upcoming 2012 F1 season starting at Melbourne, Australia on March 18, 2012. Afterwards, the team drivers were also banned to speak before the press in order to restrict
any negative comment about the performance of the team.
However, Alonso broke the imposed silence and gave the team an encouraging feel by saying that they would improve before the season-opener.
Nevertheless, he also expressed that there are many facets of the new car on which they need to work in order to make the significant improvements.
“The new single-seater has some characteristics, which are difficult to understand and maybe we’re not where we want to be yet,” Alonso admitted. “But we’ve all lived through many Formula 1 seasons and we all know very well that until we’re not in Australia
we don’t really know where we stand regarding to the others.”
Alonso said that there had been a lot of pressure on the Italian team from the media than any other team after the media gave almost no attention to the problems faced by the front-runner, Red Bull Racing on the final day of the last test.
Moreover, he said that very little could be brought to reality from the results of the performances from the pre-season testing and the real performance would be demonstrated when the season would set off.
“I just want to remind you of an episode two years ago: at the last test in Barcelona we were fifth behind Red Bull, McLaren, Sauber and Force India and two weeks later we gained a 1-2 win in Bahrain,” said Alonso.
