Fernando Alonso says pressure is on other contenders at the moment – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that the pressure to perform well in the season ahead is on the other contenders at the moment as he is already ahead of everyone in the title chase.
Alonso failed to pocket even a single point in the Belgian Grand Prix as he was retired due to an accident caused by Romain Grosjean of Lotus who drifted into Lewis Hamilton’s car at turn one of the opening lap and took off at the rear of Sauber driver,
Sergio Perez’s car which hit the Spaniard in the end. Although, the collision was very severe but luckily no one got hurt.
Before the race at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, the two-time world champion had a very strong lead over his main rivals, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing. However, now he is just 24 points ahead of the defending champion, Vettel.
The 31-year-old has said that the competition is awfully tough in the current season. Though, he said that it is extremely difficult to develop the most competent car in the remaining season. Nonetheless, he said that they must try harder to come up with
a dependable car in the forthcoming races so as to maintain the lead to win this year’s championship title.
“But we need to have a consistent car; we know that in some races McLaren will look strong and they will win the race, in some races maybe we are strong and we have the possibility to win, in some others it will be Red Bull,” he said.
Even though, the retirement in the last race has reduced his lead in the drivers’ championship, nevertheless, he is not feeling upset and has asserted that the pressure is on the others as he is still at the top of the standings.
“I think in this combination and this mix of different winners maybe we have an advantage, because with the position in the championship we have now we can afford one mistake, we can afford one bad race, the other's they cannot. So I think the pressure is
on the others at the moment,” he added.
