Fernando Alonso says that Ferrari needs a quicker car for 2013 – Formula 1 news
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso says that the team needs to develop a quicker car for next F1 season in order to win the world championship.
“For future, I think we need to improve the car. We were behind the Red Bulls, behind the McLarens, and now, in the last couple of grands prix, behind Williams and Force India,” Alonso talked about the way they lacked pace in the qualifying rounds. “We were
clearly slower than them in pace so this is something we must improve next year because we cannot fight for a world championship if we are too slow.”
He added that it is alright to be a bit slower than the opponents and the only reason he was able to fight for the championship until the final race using his current car was the combination the team has had this year. He said that the team might not get
this lucky in the future.
In September, Alonso had been leading the drivers’ championship with a 40-point lead over Red Bull’s Mark Webber.
Later on, Webber’s teammate Sebastian Vettel became his main rival after winning four consecutive Grands Prix while Alonso suffered some retirements. The Ferrari driver had then stated that if you don’t perform during two or three races, it can really hinder
your chances of winning. He had added that they had more points but their car was not as competitive.
Alonso qualified in eighth position for the championship deciding Brazilian GP and finished the race in second standing. On the other hand, Vettel started the race with a 13-point lead; finished sixth but still won his third consecutive title by a lead of
three points. After the race, Alonso stated that he is satisfied of his performance throughout the season and that he might not have won the title but he has definitely earned more respect.
Team principal, Stefano Domenicali, has stated that Alonso deserved the championship. Ferrari team president, Luca di Montezemolo, said that he is proud of the team’s effort throughout the season and also with both drivers making it to the podium this weekend.
