Fernando Alonso says that he will be defending his lead at the Hungarian GP – Formula 1 news
Fernando Alonso has said that he is focused on defending his championship lead over other drivers at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Alonso has been fantastic throughout the season and is the only driver to have won three Grands Prix in the current season. He is leading the championship and is currently 36 points ahead of the second placed Red Bull driver Mark Webber.
The Spaniard has not had the best of the qualifiers results at Hungary where he finished sixth. He said after the qualifying that he will be focusing on defending his lead during the race. The Spaniard has been able to win a race with a complex Ferrari car
at the start of the season. Since then Ferrari have updated their car and have been able to get the pace and the balance right for its drivers.
Even though the Ferrari car is not as fast as the Red Bulls or the McLarens but Alonso has been able to get the overall performance of the car in different situations to work for him and the results show it.
The Hungarian Grand Prix will be crucial for many drivers and teams, as they look to close the gaps and get stronger holds to their positions.
“I think we have to be honest and we are not in a position to be as quick as the leaders here,” Alonso said. “We are nine tenths off the pole position today so the victory tomorrow is difficult for us. We need some strange race or maybe some wet conditions
or something like that, then it may happen.”
“At the moment we are happy with sixth. At the moment, as I said, the first priority is the championship, Webber is second at the moment; he start's 11th, we start sixth, so hopefully we can keep him behind tomorrow,” he added.
Alonso said after the races that the car is still not at the pace of the front runners of the season and the team will need to work hard to sustain their position. He did however admit that the car is good on all sorts of conditions which is a major plus
in the season.
